Lesson Plan Document(s): Notes/Minutes: Reflection Thoughts/Comments: I provided two movie clips, one fairly recent popular movie (Avatar) and another (Pocohontas) that has been seen by many children. Students had to compare them and find the similarities between them. Students were to discuss with their groups the possible similarities and what the clips had in common. Students also conducted a photo sort in which they had to group like photos into categories. Again aiming for native/non-native but this was unbeknownst to them. Then we took part in an activity(Golf Tee, Pam Purcell's idea) in which students got to move around and the purpose was to illustrate again native/non-native and invasive species. Finally, students got a few photos and were to come up with conributing factors to the problem shown. This was posted on chart paper and students did a gallery walk to view what others had done and add more contributing factors. This lesson motivated students with familiar movie clips and got them to think without giving away point, but it kept them guessing and interested and thoroughly working to figure it out. They were able to collaborate and get up and move around and take part in a variety of activities. As far as common core, students were able to speak collaboratively and look at information from more than one media format. The students loved working on these lessons. They were engaged and it was fun for the students and me.

Presenter: Pam, 6th Grade Language Arts Date Lesson Presented: Tuesday, September 11, 2012 Lesson Title: Contributions Speaking & Listening Common Core Standard(s) Used: SL2 - Interpret information presented in diverse media and formats (e.g., visually, quantitatively, orally) and explain how it contributes to a topic, text, or issue under study. Lesson Plan:
1. How the activity met the guideline. Multiple Means of Representation – provided both auditory and visual means of accessing the text through the use of a video clip from the 1982 movie Annie. The video clip was a musical scene as the characters sang and entertained viewers describing “It’s the Hard Knock Life”. After viewing the video, students had a lyrics page to read the words, which may have been missed and/or misunderstood. Students used this visual and auditory information as a catalyst for teaching and reinforcing the understanding of contributions through discussion. 2. How it inhibited to enhanced learning. This method enhanced learning by allowing students to be fully engaged and be excited. They were motivated to discuss the topic of contributions and make connections. 3. How it met Common Core Standard(s): SL2 - Interpret information presented in diverse media and formats (e.g., visually, quantitatively, orally) and explain how it contributes to a topic, text, or issue under study. The students were required to interpret the information from the video and lyrics sheet and explain the topic and what contributed to them understanding the contributions. This was a follow-up to the previous day’s lesson about our new unit, Contributions. 4. Overall Reflection of the Activity. I would definitely use this again and in the same position of the lesson. It addresses contributions on multiple levels and fully engages students. It drew students in and helped make connections throughout the discussion of contributions.
